Range-pole setup
TreeHeight computes the horizontal distance from the observer to the range pole from the known vertical pole length and the phone-measured inclination angles to the pole bottom and top. Keep the observer/camera position fixed while taking these angle readings and the whole-tree photograph.
Photo and phone inclination
Start the rear camera, keep the phone/camera at the same observer position, and use the center reticle. Aim the reticle at RP-B and capture its inclination; then aim at RP-T and capture again. TreeHeight computes the horizontal observer→pole distance automatically.
Phone inclination is enabled by default whenever the browser permits it. On browsers that require a user gesture, starting the rear camera also requests sensor permission. Hold the phone in portrait, keep side tilt near 0°, and capture the tree inside this page.
Mark the photograph
Drag the five crosshairs. B = tree base, MH = merchantable-height point, TH = visible tree top, RP-B = range-pole bottom, and RP-T = range-pole top. TreeHeight uses the RP-B→RP-T line to compensate for visible sideways pole lean. Crosses are stored separately from the source photo.

Field procedure
- Enter the known vertical range-pole length. Place the pole beside the tree when visible. Only if foliage blocks it, choose Moved toward observer and record the whole-metre movement: 1 m, 2 m, 3 m… along the same ground line.
- Start the rear camera and keep the observer/camera position fixed. Aim the center reticle at the range-pole bottom (RP-B) and tap Capture RP-B angle; then aim at the pole top (RP-T) and capture its angle.
- TreeHeight computes the horizontal observer→pole distance from the pole inclination angles and, after RP-B/RP-T are marked, corrects for the pole's visible sideways lean. Keep the pole from leaning toward or away from the camera because that out-of-plane lean cannot be fully recovered from one photograph.
- Frame the complete tree and range pole. Use live camera zoom or two-finger pinch where supported; select a wider rear lens when available. Capture the whole-tree photo without changing the observer position.
- After capture, use two fingers to zoom the photograph, one finger to pan, and drag B, MH, TH, RP-B, and RP-T to the exact image points.
- If the pole was moved toward the observer, TreeHeight uses the known whole-metre pole↔tree separation and the tree-base sight angle to derive the horizontal observer→tree distance and the intervening ground slope automatically.
